It's quite clever and entertaining. You have to remember also that the series mature so you might not be so lucky and stumble upon an episode from the first season of The next Generation  and later a more advanced episode, which are usually much better

So true. I've enjoyed all the Trek series but that first season of TNG was pretty bad. Luckily there was virtually no sci-fi on at the time and it stayed on and did quite well.
