Unless you know someone is comfortable with you asking private questions about your life, I think it's rude to ask someone what they do for money or to support themselves.
It has become so commonplace and accepted as a conversation piece when it shouldn't be. In many other countries they get offened if you ask this and don't know the person well or the family.
In the old, old days, your station in life was worn on your sleave or apparent in your wardrobe, (ix. Knights had crests, blacksmiths wore leather vests,) so there was no need to ask.
That is not the case today, unless you work at the zoo and perpetually smell like ibex dung.
When someone asks what I do and I don't care to share, I say something stupid like, "I hand out bus schedules in front of the supermarket."
