I thought the same thing until I watch the dvd when peter jackson and about 20 other people go into great depth as to why they did things the way they did...why some people never died, why some characters in the book (tom bombadil) never made it into film, why some characters (faramir for example) acted completely different in the film then they did in the book, and why some speeches were delivered by completely different characters (something like wormtongue gave speech in the film that was originally given by gandalf in the book) etc, etc..

Made sense when they explained it, then again they are the ones all the way to the $$ bank
