Well, what I actually need it for is something about the combination of commercial mass media and true democracy, a combination of two things that are actually probably mutually exclusive.

This is just one example though, there are other - and even stronger - ones. For instance, in the buildup to the invasion of Iraq all 175 newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch appear to have backed the war in their editorials. Or just think about Berlusconi... a guy who has been convicted of corruption in the past, but happens to have a media monopoly in Italy and manages to become prime minister.

Although the Berlusconi example may be a very extreme and explicit example, the point remains that commercial media are not independant and thus can not be trusted to be objective. Considering the fact that commercial media are (among) the primary sources of political information for voters in most democracies, and voters base their choices on the information available to them, no true democracies exist at this time.

This is not a "left vs right" issue either, but rather one that threatens the very essence of western civilization.
