It's all political fluff to appease his ultra right wing supports before the election.

Your last point is true -- Georgie is using the issue of 'marriage and our culture' being under attack to stir up both his right wing supports and the common man who can't/won't grasp the difference beteen the religious marriage act and civil marriage law. He sure doesn't want Iraq, terrorism, jobs, eduction, etc. being debated -- just those gays trying to ruin (or worse, run) the country. But, you must understand, even though there's political motives, he does believe, in his heart, he's right. He hasn't yet grasped that we don't live in a Christian democracy/republic (however you define it).
Your first statement -- BEWARE!! Two thirds of both houses must approve an amendment. Big battle but close. It's when it comes to the states you're not looking at the facts. An amendment requires three fourths (75%) of the state legislatures approval.
How many states have already passed defense of marriage acts or taken even harsher measures -- 38. That's 76% all ready to say 'we already approve -- our vote is yes'.
So maybe like prohibition it becomes the law of the land and eventually is repealed. During those in-between years what happens?? How many Matthew Shepards or worse?? What other missuse of the Constitution might occur?? If no one speaks up when it's the non-hetros, and then no one speaks up when it's the non-traditional religious believers,
and then . . .
It's happened before. Don't think it can't happen here. If you want it, work for Georgie. If you don't -- get off your ass and do something:
<a href="http://www.house.gov/writerep/" target="_blank">Write your Representative</a><br>
<a href="http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm" target="_blank">Write your Senator</a>
Write George and let him know you will vote -- against him.
AND DO IT! VOTE!
Jay Jay (no sig -- this is personal)
