The prices here are insane. There's a house for sale near my girlfriend's place. It's a one bedroom, one bath, total piece of crap, might as well be living in a cardboard box house for $340,000. From San Jose up the peninsula to SF is real expensive. Fremont and the east bay is a little better in some places. Going farther south to Gilroy, etc. you can get into a nice house for about $230,000.

I'd advise going to Southern CA. Rentals are cheaper in the outlying cities. My brother pays $700 for a 2 bedroom apartment in Van Nuys.
