I fucking hate guns and believe they generate evil all on their own. Just the same, I don't think that guns per se are the problem here.
It's a mental health problem. We are so quick to call anyone that has any trouble handling reality "weak". We would rather ignore their troubles and hope they "just get over it" instead of giving them the help they need. We turn a blind eye to them until they act out.
I also think too many folks in this country actually believe that Flicks like "Death Wish" and "Dirty Harry" are real life. They honestly think they can go get revenge and all will turn out sunny in the end. Hell, even Clint Eastwood himself realized the flaw in that mindset. That's why he made "The Unforgiven".
