As far as how screwed up US laws go, I graduated high school when I was 17 and tried to get my own place so I could start college. I couldn't even have someone co-sign for an apartment for me. I finally got a place. Still at 18 I could work full time and pay bills, but I couldn't even get a loan for a car.
