you think it's a simple answer -- just push the button -- but if she really loves you she'll live her life without you which may be even worse... also if you are religious it's a sin to take your own life -- better to both die romantically and hope for some sort of union in the afterlife... also if nobody presses the button you don't give the sick fucker (who invented this scenario) the satisfaction of victory -- they may even feel guilty for killing both of you -- because YOU and your loved one did not CHOOSE to be in this situation -- why should you dishonor yourselves by pressing a button (which results in death) -- i'd rather die at the hand of the fucker who put me in the room...
of course if you were in your own room, you don't even know that your loved one is in the other room -- you can't see them -- you don't even know if they will die if you press the button -- in fact you don't even know if pressing the button will do anything -- if you are given instruction on how the rooms work and how the buttons work, how can you believe that these are not lies... Better to not participate...

A better question would involve a little more invention -- come up w/ a physical device whereby the loved ones could see the results of their actions:

You and your loved one are tied down but you have one free arm each -- your heads are placed inside guillotines -- you are laying on your stomaches -- you can see each other -- you are each given a rope to hold which is attached to the blade above your loved one's neck... if you let go of the rope your loved one will die -- but you will be able to untie yourself and go free (with the free arm)... BTW: the rope is short enough so you can't pull it down to hold in your teeth... What do you do?

What would you do if you were holding the rope for your own guillotine and you were forced to watch the other person (ala Clockwork Orange)? Would you allow your lover to see you die -- would you tell your lover to let go of (his/her) rope so that they would not have to see you die (since you will both die anyway...) You can still speak to each other... What would you do? What would you say?
