4th degree burns are not that uncommon. Having personally spent a good deal of time in various burn centers throughout my life since they have the best skin doctors, I can say first hand they are pretty common with bad burn cases.
To get to 4th degree you just need some skeletal burning, thats it. If the burns occure around or near the face or hands its very easy for it to reach that state.
Not having read into the story itself. I would figure she is on a medically induced coma and will remain that way for some time. Since the doctors do this on purpose to prevent the pain level from killing you.
Not to be a bringer of bad news, yet to be realistic. This in all likelyhood would be a memorial fund. Burns over 30% of your body let alone the half or 60% ratio are generally if not nearly always fatal. The body stands very little chance against the infections that come with major burns.
My heart does go out to them.
