I've used red hat, freebsd and solaris(sparc and intel). They are all much more stable and reliable than an windows os, which I have also used. The goal is to maximize uptime without as little effort and cost possible. Because the unix/linux kernel has a hell of a lot less crap built in to it, it typically can handle a lot more load with less cpu cycles which also effects performance and longevity of hardware.
