Aaron, not too sure on what they paid for it as I was young, but I know you should just look around for a stable near you and talk to them. My parents kept there's at one and just paid a fee every month for the poeple there to take care of it.

Actually horsemeat has been on the menu in europe for a very very long time, and oftentimes it's used as a cheap substitute for beef. It's not just for dogs or glue. Personally being an avid horseperson I wouldn't eat it, but to each his own. I don't begrudge people their survival.
