Let me see if I can offer some answers to your question and I'm sure others with more expertise will chime in.
To answer your first question, once a movie is protected, it cannot be edited without destroying the file rendering it useless. Kind of like a self-destruct button built into the data stream.
Then, I'm not sure what "your own" server would do? It would need to have the encryption key to issue licenses identified to that piece of content and if so, how would that be acquired? Most DRM systems use a two key system, one public and one private. If you do not have the scheme for the private key, you cannot access the database that gives permission to provide a license.
