Smaller independant supermarkets might be willing to deliver. When I was in college, my roomates and I set up a deal with a local small grocery store where they'd deliver a wide variety of produce and meats for $20 a week... 4 full sized boxes worth of food. They picked a variety of stuff that would probably go bad in about 2 weeks (but was still very edible), sold it to us, and we ate it in... about 4-5 days

Further, there *has* to be a church in the area that can help out. Churches often do this kind of thing for people who can't get out much. Most cities have a webpage that includes businesses and churches in the area; check those out for leads.

Good luck on helping your friend
