An RRSP is not a specific type of investment.... you can own any variety of investments in an RRSP......you can own mutual funds, GIC's, mortgages, etc. inside your RRSP.
there is a Canadian content requirement however... I think you are only allowed 15% foreign investments inside your RRSP (% may have changed)
So basically, if you are going to have investments... WHY NOT have them in an RRSP? You get the benefit of the tax deduction plus the income on the investments inside the RRSP are not taxed until you take it out (at retirement presumably)
