A survey published by the consumers group TransaTlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD) showed 52 percent of respondents were shopping less on the Internet or not at all because of concerns about receiving unsolicited junk e-mail.
i dont see how spam in general is scaring the customers away. it seems that the point they are making is people don't want to shop because they are afraid the shopping will cause the barrage of emails - i.e. the direct cause/effect relationship between their uneasiness to buy online is related to the merchant potentially disclosing/abusing their address.
