The World Health Organisation (WHO) is investigating a possible human-to-human transmission of the bird flu virus which has killed 10 people in Vietnam and Thailand.
The WHO said two sisters in Vietnam have died after contracting bird flu and they may have caught the virus from their brother.
However, no samples were available from the brother for testing.
The WHO's spokesman in Vietnam, Robert Deitz, says the timing of the cases appears to rule out infected food.
"The man became ill on January 3 and the three women all became ill at the same time on January 10," he said.
"There is a week delay there and we don't understand what happened but we do know that all three women cared for the man who died."
