Pets, as we call them, are merely hapless souls living in an environment created by humans. When they find themselves in unfortunate situations - usually created by us - they become helpless creatures that are victims of our own stupidity, not thiers.
So yes, saving them is justified in my mind because we created the trappings that put the animal in harm's way to begin with. We as a species enjoy the company of these wonderful creatures in our "world" so we better damned well take responsibility when they fall into unfortunate situations.
They give us unconditional love and stand by us through thick and thin. What would make anyone think that we don't owe them the same consideration and adoration?
Also, note that WE humans are animals too - we're just a different species. And what we do to help other species of animals is mearly a statemtent of our deserving to keep being a living species.
