nylon is the material that both are made from (though they can be made from other things but as a rule it is nylon). From there the difference between the two is the way in which they are made and worn.

The nylon usually only go up to the tighs and and often stockings are held in place by a garter belt. Heck, you can sell stocking sites easily to guys without any nylon fetish at all because it is something found to be sexy by a large number of guys. Pantyhose sites however are more of the nylon crowd.
