GonePhishing, just wanted to let you know that I sent your comment above to a pal from JPL who got back to me via IM. He laughed his ass off and said he couldn't have said it better than you have.
The big issue here is 'what' exactly has gone wrong. Is it something major like sabotage or something wherein we need to rethink our engineering or management or just basic mother nature taking a toll on our earthling technology. Problem is these rovers and the hierarchy of it's engineering and management is covered with so many backups that it's phenomenal that they didn't see it coming. So it's not 'what' happened, it's 'how could it have happened and we didn't see it coming?'.
Who knows, it could be a simple issue of sunspots for cryin' out loud.
