Creative Writing: I Want To Be Like Mommy When I Grow Up
When I was in high school, I had to write a poem from a child's perspective. My creative writing teacher thought the poem was great, but also quite disturbing.

I Want To Be Like Mommy When I Grow Up
I want to be like mommy when I grow up,
as men come and go out of my life.
I want the headache of divorce papers
and bold signatures and settlements.
I want to cook a big meal and feel
unappreciated when my lover comes
home with McDonald's (supersize of
course) while we watch a Blockbuster video.
I want giant hands around my neck
as I scream for mercy from God. Mommy
and Daddy are always playing. Look at mommy
scream. She is screaming. Yayyyy scream
mommy!!!!
I want to be like mommy when I grow up,
from housewife to battered woman. I want
to sell my body like she did so proudly.
That?s my mommy there getting in the car.
Go mommy. Look at mommy get money.
I want to smoke crack up my nose
as blood spills out from time to time. I want
to wear those pretty handcuffs and ride in those
long siren cars that go Whoooorrrl Whoooooorrrl.
Look at mommy cry. Mommy is so funny.
Guess what. Come a little closer. I want to be like mommy
when I grow up as she lays in the coffin with all these people
crying. Mommy is a star. Fat people are falling on her body
and people singin? so loud that I can?t hear mommy say nothin.?
Look at mommy stay still. She been staying still for awhile now.
My mommy is so funny.
