this is kinda how i do it

I just zoom to 200% and use the pen tool to outline it
then make a selection out of the paths, feather 1 pixel and anti-alias

then reverse selection, hit delete... background is gone

takes just a couple minutes if you got good eyes and coordination, and cordless optical mouse

little longer if you dont
