I don't think overcoming shyness is like overcoming the fear of heights; you have to go at it gradually.
I'm the same way pretty much, I only say as much as I need to get by.
Start small man, practice on the people you're already semi-comfortable around, even if it's family.
You already got the cool nickname, the rest is cake ...
