Just what the IS industry needs - another twit giving away shit because they are only learning how to program and have no creative juices to create anything on their own and market it. Fucking Christ! No fucking wonder that graphic designers pull more bank consistently than the people that actually make websites work. Don't get me wrong, they DESERVE the coin they charge, it's just that everyone thinks programmers are less valuable.
Oh wait! Barry Hilton gives away custom design work doesn't he? And WyldeDesigns won the Designer of the Year award this year for giving away free work, right? NOT!!!
Every punk ass wannabe hack on the planet thinks they are a programmer, or designer. YOU'RE WRONG!
Run off now to guru.com or elance.com and peddle your $5/page "complete ecommerce" packages. Based upon your initial post I'm guessing you probably just started trying to code about 3 months ago and figure you can make some quick coin in the Adult industry. Get a clue. I've been programming professionally since 1989 (for the DOD and Fortune 100 Companies) and on an amateur status since 1978.
There are a ton of us in this industry that have the same caliber of credentials. Please do not insult the skills that we have built over years of experience by offering "free programming" for business applications - in the hopes that you garner some "later business".
You want to learn as you go? Wanna take on small jobs while doing so to build up your portfolio? Great. But CHARGE people for that service. This is a business, not a playground.
Granted, I will give away tidbits of code on occasion - things that are common yet sometimes hard to find (e.g. stopping hotlinking of video) - but CUSTOM scripting/programming??? NEVER.

Angrily said my friend, but true enough.
I actually did a "free 30 minutes of my time" thing on GFY once. Actually made a good deal of business out of it, but the fact is that MOST of my business is from word of mouth because of doing a good job. Obviously you agree with me. Better to do a good job and get paid well than sell yourself to the lowest bidder.
Avant,
You have as much right as anyone to sell your services as low as you want, and i'm not going to say that I know your skill level... BUT you gotta think clearly on this one. First off you charge $130.00 an hour. I can get you a co-founder of ZEND to work for $80.00. I have personally about 4 years of php under my belt and I charge significantly less than that. Maybe the price on your site is an error?
EIther way. If you have skills like this, great! There is PLENTY of work out there for all of us! Hell, I'll probably email venturi next time I get over booked, and thats the kind of relationships you should be working for here... NOT the "undercut your competition until they go out of business (also known as the Matrix Manuver)" approach.
If you're a badass programmer and I'm off my mark, hit me up, I'm sure we can talk business, hell I'm always hiring new people for my team, but otherwise cut this stuff out..
oh, and NEVER sell work you did for someone else... I'm not saying its happened, and if The Truth Hurts really didnt pay you, then I HOPE you can sell the work you did and make back your lost hours.
rant complete. hope I didnt piss anyone off. I'm not in the mood for realworld-esque arguments.
