but the mark of a true artist is the ability to take something and make it their own.
just listen to norah jones by herself with just her voice and her playing a single piano knock out hoagy charmichael's "the nearness of you"---gives ya' fuckin goosebumps if you know music.
or bette midler's version of the ballad "as time goes by"
or diana krall doing the joni mitchell tune "a case of you" at her piano.
or natalie cole doing any number of her dad's ballads a capella.
some artists are the real thing.
and 85% of so-called artists are manufactured by handlers, who need dancers and colored lights, and fireworks and 10 backup singers to do a presentation.
