Watchmen is the best, ever.
I'm pretty much out of the loop with comics these days too, but you should check out Sincity by Frank Miller, and the first series of Give Me Liberty by Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons (he's the man!), if you haven't seem them already.
Alan Moore (one of my fave writers ever) also did a thing not too long ago called "Snakes and Ladders," which is worth having a look at, it's quite different from his other stuff but has that same dark appeal.
