The only things I can think of that the smell doesn't wash off with soap and water are onions and mustard.
So grab a little packet of mustard, rub it on your fingers like hand lotion, then wash it off after a minute or two and tell folks you just had a huge cheeseburger if they notice. (Like anyone is going to be grabbing your hand and putting it up to their nose??)

Soap and water really should do the trick, though.
