bbw as a term was coined from one of the first magazines targetted at big women. The magazine is called Big Beautiful Womwn and last time I was home in the States it was still on the newsstands. It is a fashion magazine...not a porn magazine.
It was out and becoming fairly popular at the same time that BBSes were becoming widely used and AOL, and Prodigy in particular were showing up. People began networking...finding the other poeple that found big women attractive and forming communities on the net. BBW somewhere along the line was adopted as an identifier. Sort of like short hand in a personals advert.
It was they very much embraced by the growing size acceptance community who promotes the view that they want everyone - fat or thin - to not hate their bodies...to have improved body image. As, Rictor said it is the idea that there is no one vision of beauty.
Things are much better now for big people in the way that they can search out stuff like that on the net but even now there are great numbers of large women who have no idea there is a term such as BBW and have convinced themselves that they are not allowed to exist until they are thin. They are sure no man will ever want them and if they do express interest they are just thinking they are easy. So, BBW is a term to identify an attitude. An attitude that you do not have to make excuses for who you are or what you look like. You are just as valuable a human being regardless of if you are fat or thin. It is both outward and INWARD beauty.
BBW was not a terrn invented by the porn world and therefore is not fully associated with sexual appeal - though it would be a lie to say it has nothing to do with it.
Also, I have known many a BBW who think they are the ugliest human being on the face of the earth. If the term and the community that developed around it helps a few come out of their shell and live their lives then I for one think it is a great thing.
