be honest and direct, and try to do that during the right time,

...check with and go with your gut feeling...timing and being congruent with what you say and your true feelings is a big factor in pulling off successful communication...

and best of luck to you...if it was meant to work out it will...if not, you choose to be open and honest with your friend...

as for fear of rejection...that's always a possibility, but it's a good thing to learn and break through...I'm of the belief that in order to get what you want in life you have to be willing to be rejected or fail many times along the way...it's just a step towards getting what you want ;)
