If they screwed you out of $1.6K, maybe you count it as payment on your education. Have been in similar situations and learned to get a retainer up front. Usually half. That way it doesn't hurt as bad.

The other thing I do now before providing too much consulting or effort is check out the client. Has anyone else had problems. A trip to the court house will reveal if anyone else sued 'em. That can be done online in a lot of places now.

As for your current problem, I think it would be worth while to check out the court records on them. There may be a telling story???

No, the 1700 was not for the appeal... that is about what they owe me and not sure if I want to waste the time to do it... I will have to do it myself... not going to pay another attorney for this. Wasted good money on the flunky.

Guess I will have to look into this further and see just what is involved and how much time it will take and see if it is even worth the effort... sometimes... the principal of the whole matter make it worth it... sometimes...
