I use non activation version of XPPro so I don't know if it is fixable....
But if you goto this place
http://tinyurl.com/33sd and click on "How To Run a Repair Install" it will tell you have to install windows OVER your existing copy.... It keeps all your settings and users. If that doesnt work then I don't know.
