Nuclear weapons have only been used once during war, and their use actually saved millions of lives.
Instead of launching a conventional invasion of Japan that would have cost millions of lives, the Japs surrendered quickly after having a couple of small nukes dropped on them.
I also guarantee that the US and USSR would have gone to war at some point during the Cold War if it wasn't for the fact that each side had nuclear weapons.
Given all the tension, animosity, and saber rattling between the two superpowers, the only thing that kept the peace were the nukes.
Also take a look at India and Pakistan. A couple of years ago they were about to go to war (again), but because each side now has nukes, they're more willing to sit at the bargaining table.
