The relationship between Frodo and Sam is outdated now. But when it was written, it made perfect sense. Gandalf told Frodo to bring Sam along as his manservant, to help carry stuff and whatnot. So Sam calls him "Master Frodo". It's very classist, but that's how it was. Greek phillosphy stated that a servant loves his master above himself, because his master in return will take care of everything for him. Anyways, they become good friends, what with saving each other's lives every other day, so they grow close. And males back then weren't afraid to admit they loved each other.
But if I see one more person, hobbit or otherwise, well up with tears, I'm gonna scream.
