Intercepted "chatter" from suspected terrorist groups includes mentions of Virginia, but it is not clear if the conversations are about Rappahannock County, which is west of the District, or Tappahannock, a town southeast of D.C.
Federal authorities have notified police in both areas. Rescue workers in Rappahannock are being asked not to leave the county over the holiday.
Some experts theorize terrorists may want to strike a smaller town to make Americans feel they are not safe anywhere.
U.S. officials say there also seems to be interest in targeting holiday events that draw large crowds.
The Pentagon said Tuesday it is broadening air patrols throughout the country. Surface-to-air missiles have been deployed in Washington.
