Colleagues won't sit next to sprout tester

Colleagues won't sit next to sprout tester

Tesco's chief vegetable tester says his colleagues won't sit near him because he's currently eating five kilos of Brussels sprouts a week.

Tony Vaughan, 27, from Royston, Herts, said: "Unfortunately my colleagues that sit around my desk are not exactly bowled over by my work and dread this time of year.

"I'm very careful to do all my tasting research in our special food testing kitchens but inevitably I have to return to my desk and speak to suppliers which is when they kick up a stink.

"Colleagues have even insisted I sit near a window and have hung a sign over my desk saying: "Warning - Mr Sprout sits here" but I take it all in good faith."

Although the British sprout season starts in September, Mr Vaughan's work begins in mid-November when British suppliers deluge Tesco with samples in readiness for the Christmas season.

For each sample sent in by a supplier he carries out ruthless checks to make sure the quality is even throughout.

He added: "Luckily my girlfriend loves sprouts as much as me which is a big let off as that could have taken the wind out of my sails."
