I know exactly what you're saying, and depending what you're working on, you can be entirely correct. Perfectly correct.

You are at the beginning, because the hits aren't going to the well laid out page you put there in the first place...and now you have to put something else that converts in it's place.
But once you have the 404's, either from your own mistake, hardware failure, client mistakes, or a dozen other things, you'll realize that they do offer a lot of possibilities. And once you've cashed in on those, it's hard to discount their value.
So everybody in this conversation is correct...and both game plans, if played out completely, are profitable.
But I do like me some 404's.
