um...yes, The Roman Civilisation was the richest and most powerful country.
Greatest expanse of territory
Largest military force
Wealth unsurpassed.
Length of time at the top
Now this is said in comparison to other civilisations at the time, which includes the Egyptians and the Asiatic dynasties.
The US has obviously billions of $ and the kick ass military. But in comparison the other countries at this time...they are not as mighty as the Romans.
Plus, they've still got a couple of hundred years at the top on you yet.
oh yeah...the riches worked out pretty well for the romans. Italy is still an economic power, the roman catholic church speaks for itself and they've got a kick ass football team.
