I find that if they know you are from the US then yes they will talk to you about it as not many people have all that much of a chance to ask questions directly of an American. Also, when there is something in the news involving the US than of course it is a topic of discussion because they are effected by what happens.
However, that said in the seven years I have lived in a different country I have found that expect for in extreme moments - September 11, for example - it is something on the side and day to day life in their own country in the rightfully their main concern.
Then, for all I know one of the countries you lived in was Iraq at the height of one of the wars. In which case, I could appreciate why it would be different.
Either way, doesn't change the fact that the US are not the only soldiers.
