I know trust me.
Middle tier prices are in the range specified in the first post, 2-5k for a logo is aimed at medium sized businesses, - a small design company - you'll get a few binders worth of documentation - guidelines and rules for use, mocked examples on pens on buses etc.
Signwriters and low tier designers (ie adult) accomodate the $100 - $800 range - they basically come up with one or two different logos and you choose one, thats it.
And yes as I alluded to earlier corporations routinely pay tens of thousands for a "logo" but as you say at that level you're called an "image consultant", and every aspect of their logo is subjected to rigorous testing and they end up spending around half of that sum and mostly a lot more in employee wage time - creative directors, designers, project managers, producers, focus groups, multimedia presentations, and reams of documentation.
