Inthestars, I've spend hours upon hours trying to learn about Nightsurf's relationship, because I was interested in doing something similar, however in a fair way (not Nightsurf's blind Ifriends/affiliate links). After doing some research, I think some people have mentioned they payoff MSN tens of thousands of dollars per day. It's simply a way of MSN pretending to not associate with the adult market, while making a nice chunk of change from it. I've heard rumors that the MSN/Nightsurf relationship might come to an end, but it doesn't look like it, unless somebody ELSE has a lot of cash to give MSN. Also, even InfoSpace is caught up in this NightSurf bullshit, however they did offer me the possibility of talking to a VP (yeah, one of 5,000) about offering an alternative. And the closing of InfoSpace's New York office didn't serve as encouragement either. I haven't taken the offer up yet, cause I still have to find a development team capable of handling a project of this size.
