For all you GED's out there, that's engineering talk.

A 'known unknown' is something you know you need to know but don't know, tho you do know how to find it out. For example: you can solve your problem but only in terms of a variable.

An 'unknown unknown' is something that you need to know but you don't know it yet, nor do you know how to find out. For example: you cannot solve your problem because you are lacking a variable.
