Santa Claus was started as St. Nick... as actual saint. The Catholic church is way too powerful to reckon with.
But these days, Santa is just a novelty, gives kids a chance to stay young and innocent with imagination, same as any TV show or book they read. Lets kids have some enjoyment in their life before they have to grow up and realize the world is one big lie and pit of slime. It's not so much about lying to kids as it is about feeding their imagination and having fun with it. I've never heard of anyone traumatized by hearing Santa doesn't exist. Santa exists in everyone that gives a child a present... it's the thought that counts, not the conspiracy that adults dream up
