However, if it is offensive in your local - he is a bad man - your father-in-law! You should explain your child that he is mistaking and that she is an absolutely normal child. And you must talk to your father-in-law. In our country he'd be beated for offensiveness to his grandchild!

I live in a very racially mixed area of London and I have never heard the word in any way but a negative context. Also, everyone I know over here knows exactly the baggage the word means. There are similar words used over here to describe different races and every one of them is considered by the public at large - atleast the public I know and it is portayed simiarly in the media -to be higly offensive.
Maybe the crowd at a Bernard Manning or Jim Davidson gig might disagree.
