You probably heard about LikeWhoa... LikeWhoa is a long story, but basically they were offering a LOT of webmasters completely free hosting in exchange for advertising -- and how did they pay for it? As far as I know they did something like this -- they would sign a contract for a lot of bandwidth -- then they wouldn't pay for it -- eventually they would get cut off -- and then they would move on to the next upstream provider and hustle the same trick. I really don't know the specifics of how they did things over there, but if you live in NY for a little while -- you'll see that it's a city full of hustlers -- hustling deals... It's a high stakes game -- business as a battlefiend and you better have a rock solid contract and very good lawyers -- that's not really my forte, but I think that's how it worked for LikeWhoa. It's probably safe to talk about it now because a) everyone knows and b) LikeWhoa has since dissolved... The main point is that LikeWhoa eventually burned too many bridges with upstream providers -- they got fucked -- the sky fell and everyone with a free server was in a panic.
Lensman saw the opportunity to catch some of the fallout and get some biz... With no more free servers out there -- people would finally have to pay for bandwidth... and it was painfully obvious he was very jealous of the attention that LikeWhoa was getting on his board -- LikeWhoa being the official host of the BP4L-- he "bought" XFR Hosting -- and this was to be the official host of YoGuckFoselfYoGuckFoselfYoGuckFoself -- his plan to have a monopoly on the hosting biz. The problem with Lens is that he doesn't have a clue when it comes to technology -- so he's doomed to failure running a hosting company.
Anyhow I had been using reflected.net for hosting for as long as I can remember as my primary host -- I got the main admin there in this biz a long ass time ago and he's one of those good guys that you would trust with your life. I've
always had my important files there and reflected.net has done a lot for me -- I had no intention of leaving them.
So Lensman decides that he wants to be the offical host of the BP4L since LikeWhoa was dissolved... I get an ICQ from Boneprone -- Lensman's offering me a free server. Now you must understand -- I get offered free servers all the time -- I don't really think it's a big deal anymore. I NEVER talked to Lensman about this server directly -- I was just told to talk to Ray about the server. This is where it gets funny. Ray is totally paranoid from the very beginning about this whole "deal".
1. He has no idea who I am. 2. He told me that Lensman is not really his boss -- he calls all the shots and it's his company. After I start moving some sites onto this server -- Ray tells me he has doubts about the free server deal. I tell the guy -- you better make up your mind -- because I'm not going to waste my time otherwise. I don't need this server -- I'm doing this as a favor for Boneprone and Lensman. Finally Ray and I came to an agreement. He was very uncomfortable that I was backing two hosting companies -- but he said he didn't really care about me having Jupiter in my sig -- so I said fine -- I just won't have either company in my sig -- Ray was fine with that. He told me multiple times that he didn't care if I had Jupiter in my sig -- as long as I didn't have Reflected in my sig either. So we had a deal -- and granted Lensman never said a word to me about this -- all my conversations were with Ray and Boneprone. I start moving sites onto the server and pushing traffic on it -- maxing it out. I hadn't been using the server for more than a day or two -- the password gets changed and the sites are shutdown. No warning, no apology, nothing.
I lost money on this crap because I had just purchased some traffic for these sites. Yes I did have another webmaster using the box -- hell the whole server was mine as payment for helping launch this crappy hosting company that had no history before the LikeWhoa fiasco. To make matters worse -- instead of telling me that my server had been taken from me -- they decided to pretend that there was an Apache config problem. I was furious. Nobody was monitoring my server? Ray told me no -- they don't monitor the servers. I'm thinking WTF -- this company sux and I'm supporting them? Not to mention the customer support people were SLOW -- I spent hours on hold just to get domains added to the DNS server and they sounded really uncomfortable with hardcore domain names. If you asked Ray anything, his standard response is "open a support ticket".
If you want personalized service -- you won't get it with this company. You open a support ticket -- you wait -- they fix a problem -- and then if you have another problem, you can't keep working with the same engineer -- you have to start all over again and open another support ticket. IMHO if your host doesn't know your name -- you're wasting your time.
So I just let the "free server" sit -- I wasn't going to trust these guys with my data because they weren't acting very professional and Ray really left me with the impression that he has no clue -- he manages the company, but if you ask the guy anything technical he has no idea what you're talking about. So I go to Internext with Reflected -- I'm hosting with them, promoting them -- then at Internext Ray says -- "hey Pete, truce?" -- I say sure -- I'm not upset. So he says to my face -- and I completely believed him "your server is still ready for you to use" -- so later on I call them up -- to have them give me the password to get on the box -- short after that I get very short letter from Lensman "TheFLY.net is hosted with Reflected -- you have no free server."
So you can see these guys are totally uncoordinated -- they disagree on who runs the company -- and they contradict each other Ray and Lensman -- I'd be willing to bet that Lensman doesn't even own company -- because like I said -- Ray claims it's his company -- "Jupiter" is probably just some kind of branded revshare deal -- because you can still go to http://www.xfrnetworks.com/ -- and it's no secret that it's the same company LOL.
Don't fall for all the hype. Know who you're dealing with.
