So for several years she has been in lititgation and won. From what I gather from her, this has been a common practice that to shut up a troublemaker or a whistleblower the powers that be shove you off to a psych ward, label you crazy and hope that settles it

Of course it makes sense to believe your friend. However from an objective point of view I'm pretty sceptical.
