Maher Arar is a dual citizen who was born in Syria but also holds Canadian citizenship. In September 2002, authorities at JFK airport in NYC deported him because he was on a terrorist watch list. He was sent to Jordan but ended up in Syria.
Arar says he is not a member of al-Aqaeda and says he was tortured in Syria. His statement says: "In the first two weeks, he was beaten with electric cable and kept in rooms where he could hear the sounds of others being tortured."
According to Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Canada was not informed of this deportation and it should not have happened. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge says intelligence data from other countries influenced the decision to deport Arar.
