i just discovered GFY a year ago - i knew it existed but had no idea what was going on here. You're right that GFY could get along fine without any one or two or people going away, it's reached critical mass now. It takes a small group of people who are interesting and entertaining posting day in day out to make a newsgroup or messageboard take off and I think Boneprone was the 'Serge' of this joint.

And the reason a board takes off is that the main group are perceived as posting for themselves, for the enjoyment of it with no alterior motives. Professional chatboards where the goal is to make money or develop webmaster skills are lame.
