When I lived in LA I used to keep $5,000 in a secret stash in my car just in case there was a massive earthquake and everything electronic (cc's, banks, etc) was gone for a while, I'd be able to get anything I needed, since prices for just the basics and food would undoubtly skyrocket in the interim.
