was anyone on IRC when the floodgates opened?

literally!

i remember back then, about 2yrs or so?

all you needed was the ability to write a proxy scanner that basically checked ppl when they joined a channel, to see if you can connect to the port 80 and a few others, and write that proxy along with thousands of others into a txt file.

then you write a function that connects to that port, loads a mirc bot, and makes them carry out your commands! loop through this function and you have thousands of bots waiting for your command!

With the power to literally drop anyone, or any channel that we wanted ... we were like gods on there!!

if someone accidentally kicked you from a channel, you can expect to recieve a sincere apology msg, or else that was war!

then came the floods of the botnets, mostly using a bot named GT (global threat). Basically this was more of a virus, where you make the victim run a .exe file, then it opens a hidden mirc on their pc and the invisible bot would come to the predetermined server/channel and await your commands.

I remember those bot wars were fucking vicious! Since you could not hide your IP easily back then, all it took was a simple command and you could send someone offline for a week.

then like everything, it became oversaturated. Everyone and their mom had a botnet and was bringing too much heat onto the whole scene. Soon dalnet banned all open proxies, and sent out a team of people to find and report these botnets, since it was a criminal offense to compromise a host.

I heard stories of friends that actually took these botnets, and made them download a .exe for a dialer. they said the dialer wouldnt be hidden, so the ppl would see it open and run, but when your doing it to 40k bots at a time, chances are that someone is not looking i guess, lol

Anyhow, sorry for the long rant, just felt like rambling on about another useless topic.

i wonder if its possible to scan for http proxies as well? i have my old scanners around, i bet i can modify them if possible, but i dunno.
