It's simple:
To help Movie companies make more money. As they don't havt to release movies around the world at once. So a movie comes out on DVD in the US when it haven't even been released in theaters in Europe.
If you can play the US DVD and speak English you will never go to the movies again. In theory of course as the DVD players simply play all of the codes nowadays if you change a simple setting.
